Fubara seeks enhanced trade and investment ties with Norway

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has called for the establishment of stronger trade and investment relations between Rivers State and Norway. The Governor aims to leverage Norwegian expertise to drive industrial growth and technological advancement within the state.

The proposal focuses on creating a collaborative framework that encourages Norwegian companies to invest in the state’s economy. Fubara’s outreach targets key sectors including energy, maritime services, and technical infrastructure, which are central to the economic identity of the Niger Delta.

This diplomatic push comes as the Rivers State government seeks to diversify its revenue base and reduce reliance on traditional oil rents. By attracting foreign direct investment, the administration intends to stimulate local industries and create employment opportunities for the state’s population. The Governor’s intent for these partnerships was outlined in recent discussions regarding Rivers State’s economic engagement strategy.

Energy and maritime technology partnerships

Norway is globally recognised as a leader in offshore energy production, subsea technology, and maritime logistics. For Rivers State, which serves as a critical hub for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, a partnership with Norwegian entities offers a pathway to modernising its extraction and processing capabilities.

The integration of Norwegian subsea engineering and gas-to-power technologies could assist the state in enhancing its production efficiency. Furthermore, the maritime sector in Port Harcourt, a vital artery for Nigerian trade, stands to benefit from Norwegian advancements in port management and shipping technology.

Beyond heavy industry, the Governor’s interest extends to technical capacity building. Establishing training programmes that mirror Norwegian vocational standards could ensure that the local workforce is equipped to manage high-tech energy and maritime installations.

The state government is expected to move toward formalising these intentions through high-level economic missions and bilateral talks with Norwegian trade representatives to define specific investment protections and cooperation terms.
