Staff and students of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) staged an intervention on Tuesday morning to prevent the arrest of the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ogunwole. The attempt by law enforcement officers to take the Vice-Chancellor into custody led to a tense confrontation at his official residence.
The incident occurred in Ado-Ekiti, where Professor Ogunwole resides. According to the Vice-Chancellor, the police arrived at his home at approximately 6:10 am. This arrival came shortly after he had retired to bed at around 3 am. Ogunwole stated that his children were the ones who alerted him to the presence of the security personnel outside the house, which prompted his emergence to address the situation.
As the police moved to execute their intended action, members of the FUOYE community, including academic staff and students, arrived at the scene. The resulting unfolding drama prevented the police from taking the Vice-Chancellor into custody, as the university community stood in solidarity to obstruct the arrest.
Tension within the University Community
While the specific reasons for the police operation have not been disclosed by the Nigerian Police Force, the incident has caused considerable unease within the university. The mobilisation of staff and students suggests a dispute involving the university’s leadership that has moved beyond administrative channels.
