Liquid Network, a prominent Bitcoin-based payments and settlement platform, has confirmed a massive security breach involving the theft of approximately $320 million in Bitcoin.
The platform revealed that hackers successfully withdrew about 4,000 of the 4,200 Bitcoin held in its federation wallet. This loss represents roughly 95 per cent of the wallet’s total holdings, marking one of the most significant thefts within the Bitcoin ecosystem.
The incident, which was reported following a major security breach in the Liquid Network wallet, has raised urgent questions regarding the security of sidechain settlement layers.
Liquid Network operates as a sidechain to the main Bitcoin blockchain, designed to facilitate faster and more confidential transactions. A key component of its architecture is the federation wallet, which is intended to be managed through a multi-signature system by a group of participating entities. This setup is designed to ensure that no single party can control the funds, providing a layer of decentralised security that relies on the collective consensus of the federation members.
The scale of this breach suggests a critical failure in the protocol or the compromise of a significant number of the federation’s members. When such a large percentage of a wallet’s holdings—in this case, 95 per cent—is removed in a single incident, it indicates that the technical safeguards designed to prevent unauthorised withdrawals were bypassed effectively.
The theft occurs at a time when the cryptocurrency market remains sensitive to security vulnerabilities. For African markets, particularly Nigeria, the implications are notable. Nigeria maintains one of the highest rates of cryptocurrency adoption globally, with many businesses and individuals using digital assets for cross-border payments and as a store of value.
A breach of this magnitude on a major settlement platform can impact investor confidence and influence the regulatory approach to digital asset service providers. While the direct impact on individual Nigerian retail users depends on their exposure to Liquid Network’s specific services, the broader sentiment regarding the safety of Bitcoin-based sidechains is likely to shift.
As of now, the exact method used by the hackers to gain access to the federation wallet remains unconfirmed. The network is expected to provide further updates as investigations into the source of the breach continue.
