How Ex-EFCC Chairman Ibrahim Lamorde Died in Egypt
Ibrahim Lamorde, the former chairman of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), was reported dead on Sunday, May 26.
His death occurred in Cairo, Egypt, at 3 am local time, following complications from surgery.
How it Happened
Ibrahim Lamorde’s last days were spent in Cairo. According to family sources cited by TheCable, he had travelled to the North African nation for a different reason but randomly decided to use the opportunity to run a routine medical check-up.
Following the examinations, the doctors were said to have discovered an ailment and recommended an immediate surgery.
Although, the surgery was declared successful, complications arose three days later and the unfortunate incident ended Ibrahim Lamorde’s earthly journey.
About Ibrahim Lamorde
Born on December 20, 1962, in Mubi, Adamawa State, Lamorde’s journey in Nigeria’s law enforcement began at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology in 1984.
Joining the Nigeria Police Force two years later, his career was characterised by his relentless pursuit of justice.
Lamorde’s service at the EFCC began in 2003 when he became the pioneer director of operations. His leadership qualities and firm stance on corruption prevention saw him ascend to the role of acting chairman in January 2008, following the tenure of Nuhu Ribadu.
His initial stint as the acting chairman was temporary, as Farida Waziri took over in June 2008. However, Ibrahim Lamorde returned to the EFCC in 2010, again taking on the role of director of operations.
His reappointment as the acting chairman came in November 2011, after President Goodluck Jonathan removed Waziri from her position.
In February 2012, the Nigerian Senate confirmed Ibrahim Lamorde as the third substantive chairman of the EFCC, a position he held with distinction until November 2015.
Under his leadership, the EFCC made significant strides in its fight against corruption, setting a standard for subsequent administrations.
