How Nigerian Films Pulled in N2.8 Billion This December

This December, Nigerian cinemas were buzzing with excitement, and for good reason. The box office raked in a record-breaking N2.8 billion, showing just how much Nigerians love their movies.

Over 537,000 tickets were sold, marking the best December for cinemas since 2019. But how did this magic happen? Let’s dive in.

The movies that stole the show

Leading the charge was Everybody Loves Jenifa. This hilarious and heartwarming movie starring Funke Akindele was an unstoppable force. By its third weekend, it had grossed over N1 billion, making it one of Nollywood’s highest-grossing films ever. On the last weekend of December alone, it pulled in N250 million!

Other Nollywood hits didn’t disappoint either. Mufasa, a family-friendly adventure, earned N267 million in total, while Alakada: Bad & Boujee made N205.3 million. These films proved that Nigerian audiences are eager to watch local stories that entertain and inspire.

International movies also joined the party. Disney’s Moana 2 grossed an impressive N358.3 million, while Sonic 3 made a solid N70.6 million during its debut.

How boxing day influenced the situation

One day stood out in December—Boxing Day. Over 47,000 tickets were sold on this day alone, making it the busiest day for cinemas since the pandemic.

Families, friends, and couples filled theaters across the country, proving that watching movies together is still a cherished tradition.

Why Nollywood keeps winning

So, what’s fueling this growth? A big part of it is the quality of Nollywood films. Nigerian filmmakers are telling stories that resonate with the audience—funny, emotional, and deeply relatable.

The rise in ticket sales also shows that people are ready to spend on good entertainment, with the average ticket price at N5,220.

Support from the government has also played a role. Earlier this year, a N5 billion Creative Fund was introduced to help filmmakers bring their projects to life. This support has allowed Nollywood to thrive, creating movies that can compete with international blockbusters.

What’s Next for Nollywood?

With such an incredible December, the Nigerian cinema industry is on track for an even bigger year in 2025. Experts predict that total box office earnings could surpass N10 billion, a milestone that will further cement Nigeria’s place as a leader in Africa’s film market.

This growth also reflects the larger potential of Nigeria’s creative economy. Nollywood isn’t just about entertainment; it’s about creating jobs, boosting the economy, and telling stories that matter. With new films on the horizon and more support flowing into the industry, the future of Nigerian cinema looks brighter than ever.

So, if you missed out on the cinema rush this December, don’t worry—2025 promises to be even better. Grab your popcorn and get ready for the next wave of Nollywood magic!
