Fela Makes History as First African Inducted Into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

Legendary Nigerian music icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti has made history again, becoming the first African artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The late Afrobeat pioneer was named among the 2026 honourees and will be recognised in the Early Influence category.

The honour places Fela among global music figures whose sound, message, and creativity changed the direction of modern music.

His induction is another major global recognition for an artist whose influence has stretched far beyond Nigeria and Africa. Decades after his passing, Fela’s music still inspires musicians, activists, and fans across the world.

Fela created Afrobeat by blending highlife, jazz, funk, percussion, and fearless political commentary. His songs were not only dance records, they were statements against corruption, oppression, and abuse of power. That bold identity helped turn him into one of Africa’s most important cultural exports.

The list of new Hall of Fame honourees was announced in the United States during a live broadcast. Nigerian-born British singer Sade Adu was also recognised in the Performer category, adding another strong African connection to the event.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is one of the music industry’s most respected institutions, celebrating artists whose work has shaped generations and influenced global culture. For many fans, Fela’s inclusion is long overdue.

This latest milestone comes shortly after another historic moment. Earlier this year, Fela was posthumously honoured with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, becoming the first African musician to receive that recognition.

Nearly 30 years after his death, Fela’s legacy continues to grow. His records remain timeless, his message still resonates, and his name continues to open doors for African music on the world stage.

The official induction ceremony is scheduled to hold on November 14  at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.
