How Will Google Influence Nigeria’s $15 Billion AI Growth by 2030?

For some time now, Nigeria has seen an increase in digital technology and innovation. A new report from Google reveals that by 2030, Artificial Intelligence (AI) could contribute an impressive $15 billion to Nigeria’s economy.

This potential growth represents a significant opportunity for businesses, creators, and workers in Nigeria.

How Google will impact Nigeria

In 2023, Google’s products and services, including Search, Ads, YouTube, and Cloud, generated an estimated $1.8 billion in economic activity across Nigeria. This contribution has been crucial in boosting productivity among Nigerian businesses and individuals.

Olumide Balogun, the Director for West Africa at Google, emphasized the importance of this contribution at a recent press roundtable in Lagos. He noted that this economic activity helped improve how people work and create in Nigeria.

Balogun also highlighted the positive effects of Google’s digital skills programs, such as Digital Skills for Africa and the Career Certificates Programme. In 2023 alone, over 1.5 million young Nigerians learned new digital skills, making them better prepared for the job market. This focus on skill development is essential as Nigeria rapidly embraces digital technology.

How AI could be a game changer for Nigeria

The report predicts that AI could be a game changer for Nigeria’s economy. Balogun stated that for every $1 invested in digital technology, Nigeria could see a return of over $8 in economic value.

Google’s commitment to developing responsible AI is expected to drive this growth. The company’s efforts to improve internet access, support local entrepreneurs, and foster innovation will play a big role in unleashing the potential of AI in Nigeria.

In 2021, Google pledged $1 billion to accelerate Africa’s digital economy. This investment aims to improve internet access and support local talent. Balogun noted that this funding is already creating lasting impacts in Nigeria, paving the way for further growth in the tech sector.

The report also calls for stronger policies from Nigerian leaders to maximize AI’s benefits.

Recommendations include promoting cloud-first policies and enhancing digital infrastructure. Additionally, it stresses the need for improved education in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) to prepare the workforce for the future.

How Nigeria could be a digital leader

According to Amy Price, the Director and Head of Technology Policy at Public First, Nigeria is a digital front-runner in Africa. The country’s tech investments are seen as a catalyst for growth and development, especially in areas like connectivity and AI.

This perspective suggests that Nigeria has the potential to lead in the digital economy, significantly benefiting from AI advancements.
