Igbo Agenda Dialogue endorses Peter Obi for 2027 presidency

The Igbo Agenda Dialogue (IAD) has endorsed Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), for the 2027 presidential election.

The group, which advocates for the political and socio-economic advancement of the Igbo people, stated that the endorsement is a move to ensure the South-East region has a strong voice in the next administration. The IAD’s decision follows a series of internal assessments regarding leadership requirements for the next electoral cycle.

The announcement was made following deliberations on the political interests of the Igbo people and the necessity of supporting candidates who align with regional development goals.

Regional political consolidation

The endorsement of Peter Obi by the IAD suggests a strategy to consolidate the South-East voting bloc ahead of the 2027 polls. For several election cycles, political stakeholders in the region have sought to present a unified front to increase their bargaining power within the Nigerian federation.

By backing the NDC candidate, the IAD aims to direct regional attention toward a specific political direction. The group indicated that the endorsement is rooted in the need for leadership that can address pressing issues such as economic stability, security, and the equitable distribution of national resources.

Peter Obi, who has previously been a major figure in Nigerian presidential politics, now moves into this new cycle under the banner of the NDC. This shift in party affiliation and the subsequent backing by a significant regional interest group like the IAD will likely influence the early stages of political campaigning in the South-East.

The IAD has noted that its involvement in the 2027 roadmap is part of a long-term plan to ensure that the political aspirations of the Igbo people are not sidelined in national governance. This early endorsement sets a tone for how regional groups may engage with political parties in the coming years.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has not yet released a formal schedule for party activities or a response to the specific terms of the IAD’s endorsement. Political observers are now looking toward the party’s next steps in mobilising support across the country.
