The Imo State court has resumed the trial of suspects accused of the abduction of prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members. The proceedings follow a high-profile kidnapping incident that occurred earlier this month, which has heightened concerns regarding the safety of graduates during the annual mobilisation exercise.
The victims were intercepted by gunmen on 1 October 2026 while travelling along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway. At the time of the attack, the prospective corps members were in transit from Ibadan, Oyo State, to their assigned orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.
The resumption of these legal proceedings follows the abduction of prospective corps members that left many families in distress and raised questions about the security of major transit routes.
Details of the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway Incident
The attack occurred during a critical window for the NYSC, as thousands of Nigerian graduates migrate across the country to begin their mandatory service year. The Owerri-Onitsha Expressway, a vital artery for commerce and transport in the South-East, has frequently been cited as a flashpoint for criminal activities, including highway robberies and kidnappings.
The suspects currently facing trial are alleged to have targeted the group because of their perceived vulnerability as students travelling with limited resources. While details regarding the specific charges and the number of suspects currently in custody are being processed by the court, the case remains a priority for security agencies monitoring the South-East corridor.
The NYSC management and various security agencies have previously called for increased patrols along major interstate highways during orientation periods. For many corps members, the journey from their states of origin to their places of primary assignment is often fraught with anxiety due to the rising trend of kidnapping for ransom.
The outcome of this trial is expected to provide clarity on the identities of the perpetrators and the level of organised criminal activity operating along the Imo-Anambra transit route. Further updates on the court’s decisions regarding bail applications or witness testimonies are expected in the coming weeks.
