The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended all annual leave for its staff to prepare for the 2027 general elections. The decision, announced by the commission’s chairman, aims to ensure that the agency maintains maximum manpower for the intensive administrative and logistical work required for the next electoral cycle.
This measure is designed to prevent personnel shortages that could impact critical tasks such as voter registration, field operations, and the management of electoral technology. By ensuring that all staff members are available for duty, the commission intends to strengthen its operational readiness in the years leading up to the polls.
The suspension follows the chairman’s briefing on the commission’s strategy to tighten administrative control ahead of the 2027 voting period.
Enhancing electoral logistics
The decision addresses the immense logistical demands of conducting elections in Nigeria. The commission must manage vast networks of staff, secure the movement of sensitive materials, and maintain the accuracy of the national voter register across all states.
Previous election cycles have highlighted the importance of staffing levels, particularly during periods of continuous voter registration (CVR) and the training of ad-hoc workers. With the 2027 elections approaching, the INEC leadership is prioritising the stability of its permanent workforce to manage these large-scale operations without interruption. This includes the oversight of regional offices that coordinate local activities across the six geopolitical zones.
Beyond staff availability, the commission is tasked with the ongoing maintenance and upgrading of electoral hardware, such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). Having a full complement of technical and administrative staff is essential for the rigorous testing and eventual deployment of these digital tools.
The suspension of leave will apply to staff across the commission’s various offices nationwide. This ensures that regional offices are adequately staffed to handle local registration drives and community engagement activities throughout the upcoming preparatory phases.
The commission is expected to provide further updates on its operational roadmap and the specific timelines for the various administrative milestones of the 2027 election cycle.
