In this instance, a driver collected N3,600 in fares, only to face aggressive demands from “agberos” for N1,200, which they claimed as their right.

His refusal, based on needing the money for fuel, quickly escalated to aggressive threats and physical intimidation.

Such tactics by the “agberos,” known for their bullying and unjust demands for money, are a common menace in Lagos.

They aggressively target transporters, private vehicles, business owners, and hawkers, contributing to a climate of fear and disorder.

The aggression of these “agberos” in Lagos State extends beyond public transport. Recently, Nigerian film director and writer Biodun Stephen added her voice to this narrative.

She took to X to share her encounter with these area boys.

Labeling them as a “pandemic in Lagos,” she urged the state government and Governor Sanwo Olu to tackle this escalating issue.

Her appeal highlights the increasing concern among Lagosians regarding the uncontrolled activities of “agberos.”

Area boys, or agbèrò, are loosely organized gangs prevalent in major Nigerian cities.

They extort money, sell illegal drugs, act as informal security guards, and perform various odd jobs for compensation.

In Lagos State, the term ‘agbero’ has evolved to describe thugs who collect various fees and taxes around motor parks, often through intimidation and force.

Furthermore, it is alleged that they often operate under the patronage of politicians, carrying out covert tasks on their behalf.
