Jigawa State Governor Malam Umar Namadi has approved the recruitment of 1,920 teachers to address the shortage of qualified staff in senior secondary schools across the state.
The Governor announced the decision during the presentation of appointment letters to selected candidates in Dutse. The recruitment drive is intended to improve the standard of education and ensure that senior secondary institutions are adequately staffed with trained professionals.
The move follows growing concerns regarding the gap in teacher availability, which has impacted the delivery of the curriculum in many state-run secondary schools. By onboarding these new educators, the state government aims to provide better academic support to students as they prepare for external examinations.
Strengthening the state’s educational framework
The recruitment specifically targets the senior secondary level, where a shortage of specialised subject teachers often hinders students’ ability to master core academic requirements. This deficiency in human capital has historically contributed to challenges in student performance and transition rates from basic to secondary education in the region.
During the ceremony, Governor Namadi stated that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the quality of learning within the state. The recruitment of these 1,920 personnel is expected to reduce the workload on existing staff and provide a more balanced teacher-to-student ratio in both urban and rural school settings.
In many northern Nigerian states, the recruitment of teachers is a critical component of human capital development policies. As state governments face pressure to meet the requirements of the Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme, addressing the vacancy gap in secondary schools becomes a necessity for long-term economic and social stability.
The newly recruited teachers will undergo the necessary onboarding processes before being deployed to various local government areas within Jigawa State. The state government is expected to coordinate the distribution of these staff members to ensure that the most underserved schools receive immediate assistance.
