Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo has met with the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria to discuss strategic partnerships aimed at strengthening the country’s aviation and aerospace sectors.
During the discussions, the envoy expressed confidence in the current trajectory of Nigeria’s aviation industry, noting that the performance of the country’s airports has shown positive signs. The meeting aims to establish a formal framework for technical cooperation between the two nations to enhance operational efficiency.
The engagement, facilitated by the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, comes as part of a broader effort to integrate international expertise into Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure and safety protocols.
Potential areas of bilateral cooperation
According to a statement by Tunde Moshood, the Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister, the Indian envoy expressed a strong conviction that both Nigeria and India have much to gain from closer ties in the aviation space. The envoy’s observations were made during a recent meeting with the Minister, where the performance of Nigerian airports was a central point of conversation.
The High Commissioner noted that each visit reinforces the potential for mutual growth through shared expertise and technological exchange. India maintains a highly developed aviation ecosystem, with significant advancements in air traffic management, airport automation, and civil aviation training programmes.
For Nigeria, a partnership with India could provide access to critical technical training, advanced ground handling technologies, and expertise in managing increased passenger volumes at major hubs like Murtala Muhammed International Airport. Such collaboration aligns with the current administration’s goals to modernise airspace management and upgrade airport facilities across the country.
Keyamo has previously advocated for improved safety standards and more robust infrastructure within the Nigerian aviation industry. By leveraging the technical capabilities of emerging economies like India, the Ministry intends to bridge existing gaps in domestic aviation capacity and service delivery.
While the specific technical scope of the proposed partnership has not been fully disclosed, the Ministry is expected to enter further negotiations to define the exact areas of collaboration, ranging from pilot training to the deployment of advanced aviation technologies.
