Many Reported Dead in Suspected Meningitis Outbreak in Sokoto

A suspected outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis has raised alarm in Kurawa village, Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, as the disease claims lives, mostly among children and teenagers.
Local sources report a worsening situation, with an estimated two to three deaths occurring daily. Many of the victims are between the ages of two and 20.

Health officials at the village’s facility say they are overwhelmed by the growing number of patients. “People come in large numbers every day, seeking treatment. We are unsure of what is causing these deaths,” said one source. In many cases, victims die before a proper diagnosis can be made.

Symptoms commonly reported by residents include unconsciousness, severe neck pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, high fever, and in some instances, foaming at the mouth all indicators of meningitis. “In some cases, children first complain of neck pain before losing consciousness,” a source explained.

Despite warnings that the outbreak could be meningitis, locals are increasingly concerned as the disease has not subsided. “It’s still spreading, and people are starting to suspect it might be something else,” one resident said.

The village head, Mudassir Abdullahi Kurawa, confirmed the outbreak, stating that between 10 to 15 people have died in Kurawa alone, with many more casualties reported in nearby villages. He explained that the outbreak began about three weeks ago, and on one day alone, 15 patients were admitted, with three of them dying immediately.

Sokoto’s Commissioner for Health, Faruk Abubakar Wurno, confirmed receiving the report and immediately dispatched health personnel to investigate. “We’ve provided medications free of charge, but the exact number of casualties is still unknown,” Wurno said.

As the community grapples with fear and uncertainty, the full scope of the outbreak remains unclear. The situation calls for swift action and further investigation to prevent more deaths and to confirm the nature of the illness.
