The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has secured a N15 million donation following an industrial working visit to a gold refinery in Accra, Ghana.
The delegation, led by the NANS National President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, visited the Sewia Mining & Refinery to gain technical insights into the precious metals sector. The visit was designed to provide student leaders with first-hand exposure to gold processing and the broader operational workflows of the mining industry.
During the engagement, the NANS executives received the N15 million donation from Igbasan, a move aimed at supporting the association’s activities following their industrial tour.
Technical exposure and industry engagement
The working visit allowed NANS executives and various student leaders to observe the complexities of gold refining. By moving beyond theoretical discussions, the delegation sought to understand the practicalities of resource management and the technological requirements of the precious metals industry, which remains a critical component of the West African economy.
Ghana has long been a significant player in the regional gold market, and the visit to the Sewia Mining & Refinery provided the Nigerian student leaders with a benchmark for industrial standards in the sub-region. For NANS, such engagements are increasingly focused on bridging the gap between academic learning and the practical demands of high-value industries like mining and metallurgy.
The involvement of student unions in industrial tours reflects a growing trend of student leadership seeking direct engagement with sectors that drive national economies. This exposure is intended to equip student representatives with a better understanding of the economic landscapes that affect Nigerian youth, particularly in terms of job creation and industrial skill requirements.
The NANS leadership is expected to utilise the donation for upcoming student welfare and organisational projects. The association has not yet released a specific breakdown of how the N15 million funds will be allocated across its various national programmes.
