The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully apprehended and repatriated 52-year-old Festus Ibewuike, a suspected drug kingpin, from the Benin Republic. His arrest marks the end of a two-year manhunt following a major narcotics seizure in Lagos.
Ibewuike had been a fugitive for over 24 months after authorities intercepted 49.70kg of heroin at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. The scale of that seizure identified Ibewuike as a central figure in the trafficking operation, prompting an intensive search by security agencies.
The repatriation follows successful coordination between the NDLEA and regional authorities in the Benin Republic. This operation is viewed as a victory for cross-border intelligence sharing aimed at dismantling international narcotics syndicates operating within West Africa.
Intelligence-led operations and regional cooperation
The pursuit of the suspect intensified after the NDLEA intercepted 49.70kg of heroin at the MMIA, an event that highlighted the ongoing challenges of securing Nigeria’s primary international gateway against organised crime. Following the initial seizure, investigations linked Ibewuike to the distribution network, leading to his flight from the country.
For more than two years, Ibewuike managed to evade detection by moving through regional borders before eventually settling in the Benin Republic. However, intelligence-led surveillance conducted by the NDLEA’s specialized units allowed officers to track his movements and facilitate his capture through local law enforcement channels.
The agency’s ability to secure the suspect’s return underscores the increasing importance of bilateral security cooperation in the sub-region. Drug trafficking networks frequently exploit the porous borders between Nigeria and its neighbours to move illicit substances, often using West Africa as a transit point for shipments destined for Europe and the Americas.
The NDLEA has not yet released a specific timeline for the commencement of legal proceedings against Ibewuike. He is expected to face interrogation and subsequent prosecution under the NDLEA Act regarding his alleged role in the massive heroin trafficking ring uncovered at the Lagos airport.
