Neymar Jr. has confirmed that his time with Brazil is over, closing the door on any possibility of returning to the national team after a 16-year international career.
The 34-year-old Santos forward reaffirmed his decision following his club’s 4-2 victory over Universidad Central in the Copa Sudamericana knockout-round playoffs, weeks after Brazil were eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Neymar had first indicated that his international career was finished following Brazil’s 2-1 Round of 16 defeat to Norway on July 5. His latest comments remove any remaining uncertainty about whether he might reconsider the decision.
He told reporters that he had made history with Brazil and had given everything to the national team, but no longer wanted to continue.
Why Is Neymar Leaving Brazil?
Neymar’s retirement follows another disappointing World Cup campaign for Brazil.
The five-time champions were knocked out by Norway in the Round of 16 after Erling Haaland scored twice late in the match to secure a 2-1 victory.
Neymar converted a penalty deep into stoppage time, but it proved only a consolation as Brazil suffered their earliest World Cup exit since 1990.
The defeat became the final chapter of Neymar’s World Cup career.
His participation in the tournament had already been affected by injury. A calf problem kept him out of Brazil’s opening matches before he returned as a substitute against Scotland and later appeared from the bench against Norway.
Despite the difficult ending, Neymar still managed to score at the 2026 tournament, making him only the second Brazilian after Pelé to score at four different World Cups.
What Did Neymar Achieve With Brazil?
Neymar leaves international football as Brazil’s all-time leading men’s goalscorer with 80 goals, surpassing Pelé’s long-standing mark of 77 recognised by FIFA.
His international journey began in 2010, when he made his senior debut against the United States and scored in the match.
Over the following 16 years, Neymar became the central attacking figure for a generation of Brazilian football.
He represented Brazil at the 2014, 2018, 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups and also featured in Copa América, the FIFA Confederations Cup and the Olympic Games.
One of the biggest successes of his senior international career came in 2013, when Brazil won the FIFA Confederations Cup on home soil.
Three years later, Neymar captained Brazil to their first Olympic gold medal in men’s football at the Rio 2016 Games.
His final World Cup goal against Norway also ensured that he scored at four editions of the tournament.

How Did Injuries Affect His Career?
Neymar’s Brazil career was repeatedly interrupted by injuries, particularly at major tournaments.
At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, his tournament ended before the semi-final after he suffered an injury in the quarter-final.
He also dealt with fitness problems during the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, while another injury limited his involvement in the 2026 tournament.
Those setbacks became an important part of Neymar’s international story. He remained Brazil’s most productive goalscorer, but injuries repeatedly disrupted his attempts to lead the country to a sixth World Cup title.
The 2026 tournament provided one final example.
Neymar entered the competition with fitness concerns, missed Brazil’s opening games and was limited to substitute appearances when he returned.
His late goal against Norway ultimately became the final goal of his Brazil career.

Did Neymar Ever Win the World Cup?
Despite his individual records, the World Cup remained the major trophy Neymar could not win with Brazil.
He arrived at four World Cups carrying expectations that he could help Brazil end a title drought stretching back to 2002.
The closest he came was in 2014, when Brazil reached the semi-finals on home soil, although Neymar missed the eventual defeat to Germany because of injury.
His generation nevertheless delivered success elsewhere.
Brazil won the 2013 Confederations Cup, while Neymar played a decisive role in securing Olympic gold in 2016.
But the World Cup continued to elude him, and the defeat to Norway ended his final opportunity to lift football’s biggest international trophy as a player.
What Happens to Brazil Without Neymar?
Neymar’s departure brings an era of Brazilian football to an end.
For more than a decade, Brazil’s attack was built around his creativity, goals and ability to create decisive moments.
His retirement now leaves the national team increasingly dependent on a younger generation of attacking players to define its next era.
Brazil will also have to address the larger questions raised by another early World Cup exit.
The country remains international football’s most successful World Cup nation with five titles, but it has now gone more than two decades without lifting the trophy.
Neymar was expected to be the player who could help end that drought.
He leaves without achieving that goal, but with 80 international goals and a career that places him among the most productive players ever to wear Brazil’s famous yellow shirt.
For Neymar, there is now little ambiguity about what comes next internationally.
His chapter with Brazil is finished.
