Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso Officially Withdraws from ECOWAS
Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have formally exited the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). According to an ECOWAS Commission announcement on January 29, 2025, the separation is now official.
Despite this withdrawal, the three countries will continue to participate in the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme, which allows the free movement of goods and services.
Additionally, ECOWAS stated that passports and ID cards featuring its logo will remain valid for travel within the region.
The commission also emphasised the importance of continuing visa-free movement and residency rights for the citizens of these countries under existing ECOWAS protocols until new arrangements are determined.
