Nigeria’s Hope to Reach the World Cup Now Looks Hard

Nigeria’s dream of playing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup is hanging by a thread after their backup plan to qualify through the playoff route was blocked.

The Super Eagles can no longer qualify as one of the best runners-up, meaning their only chance is to finish top of Group C, a task that now looks very difficult.

The results from other groups have gone against Nigeria, officially ending the hope of qualifying through the intercontinental playoffs. Four African teams, Gabon, Madagascar, Burkina Faso, and Cameroon, have already secured more than the maximum 17 points Nigeria can still reach.

That means even if the Super Eagles win their remaining matches, it won’t be enough to qualify through the second-place route.

Now, topping Group C is the only option left. But the road looks rough. Benin Republic and South Africa currently lead the group with 14 points each, while Nigeria sit three points behind.

The Super Eagles must win both of their remaining matches against Lesotho on October 10 and Benin Republic on October 14 and still hope their rivals drop points.

For South Africa, the chances look bright as they will play both of their last games at home, against Zimbabwe and Rwanda.

Two wins will take them to 20 points, a mark Nigeria cannot reach. Benin Republic also remain strong contenders, though their final clash against Nigeria in Uyo could still affect who finishes top.

Despite the odds, the Super Eagles are not giving up. The team has been training in Polokwane, South Africa, with 20 players already in camp preparing for the must-win game against Lesotho. Sources from the camp say the atmosphere remains positive and focused, even though everyone understands how tough the situation is.

Since their World Cup debut in 1994, Nigeria has only missed two tournaments in 2006 and 2022. Now, the fear of missing back-to-back World Cups is becoming real.

Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong has urged fans to keep believing. He says the team is ready to fight till the end and believes the coach has selected the right players to get the job done.
