Obiora Okonkwo’s Airline Set to Buy Six New Aircraft for Expansion
United Nigeria Airlines, the carrier founded by businessman and politician Obiora Okonkwo, is preparing for a major leap in its operations after signing a deal to acquire six Boeing 737-800 aircraft.
The agreement, reached at Southwest Airlines’ headquarters in Dallas, Texas, signals one of the most ambitious fleet growth moves in Nigeria’s aviation industry in recent years.
The new jets are expected to boost the airline’s capacity on both domestic and regional routes, while also laying the groundwork for future international operations.
According to Okonkwo, who serves as Executive Chairman, the acquisition is more than a purchase, it’s a statement of intent. “We are building on our first four years with a clear plan to scale profitably. These aircraft will help us expand services, improve efficiency, and give passengers more travel options across Africa,” he said.
Beyond simply adding planes, the deal creates a long-term technical partnership with Southwest.
This includes provisions for crew training and maintenance support areas that remain critical for sustaining high safety standards and passenger confidence in Nigeria’s aviation space.
The six aircraft are part of a broader expansion roadmap. United Nigeria Airlines is already considering adding four more Boeing 737-800 Next Generation jets between 2026 and 2027, which would significantly strengthen its position as a regional player.
With the expanded fleet, the airline hopes to reduce flight layovers, launch new direct routes, and scale up its cargo services, all while keeping ticket prices within reach for everyday travelers.
Since launching operations in 2020, United Nigeria Airlines has built a reputation for reliability and customer service, connecting key Nigerian cities and gradually widening its footprint in West Africa.
Okonkwo, whose business interests span hospitality, logistics, and entertainment through companies such as The Dome Entertainment and Hospitality Group, employs over 1,000 people across his ventures.
The expansion push is expected to ripple into the broader economy by creating jobs and reinforcing trade links.
Okonkwo has also aligned the move with Nigeria’s national priorities, noting that the aviation sector plays a vital role in driving tourism, commerce, and regional integration.
With this latest deal, United Nigeria Airlines is positioning itself not just as another carrier in Nigeria, but as a strong contender in Africa’s growing aviation landscape.
