Abia Governor Otti rewards world debate champions with N1m each

Governor Alex Otti has announced a N1 million cash reward for each student in the Abia Model Junior Secondary School contingent that won a world debate championship. The financial incentive is intended to recognise the students’ intellectual achievement on the global stage.

The students, who represented Abia State in the international competition, were honoured during a welcome ceremony held on Saturday. The event brought together the winning team, school officials, and state representatives to celebrate their success.

By providing these substantial rewards, the state government aims to motivate other students to pursue academic and oratorical excellence. This recognition follows the students’ successful return to the state after securing their titles in the global contest.

The Governor made the announcement during a welcome ceremony in Umuahia held at the Michael Okpara Auditorium. The venue served as the location for the formal reception of the contingent from Abia Model Junior Secondary School.

Promoting academic competition

The decision to award N1 million to each individual winner is part of a broader effort to encourage competitive intellectualism among the youth in Abia State. While sports often receive significant attention, this move highlights the administration’s intent to place equal value on academic and public speaking accomplishments.

The success of the Abia Model Junior Secondary School students has placed the institution and the state on the international map for educational quality. The victory demonstrates that students from the state possess the capacity to compete effectively at the highest global levels of debate and critical thinking.

The rewards are expected to influence the academic culture within secondary schools across the state, potentially leading to increased participation in debate societies and other intellectual clubs. The state government’s approach seeks to create a culture where academic merit is met with tangible support.

The ceremony concluded with the formal recognition of the students’ efforts, as the state seeks to build on this momentum to improve general educational outcomes in Abia.
