Oyebanji seeks Ekiti Assembly approval for 13 new appointees

Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State has formally requested the Ekiti State House of Assembly to screen and confirm the reappointment of three former commissioners and 10 special advisers.

The request was conveyed through an official letter to the legislative chamber, where the nominees must undergo a mandatory vetting process before they can officially assume their roles within the state executive council and the Governor’s advisory team.

By seeking the return of three former commissioners, the Governor is moving to consolidate his administration with experienced hands, a move intended to provide continuity in key government ministries and departments.

This request follows a communication to the Ekiti House of Assembly regarding the expansion and refinement of the state’s political leadership.

Under the legal framework governing state governments in Nigeria, while the Governor holds the authority to nominate members of the cabinet, the House of Assembly serves as a vital constitutional check. The legislature is tasked with ensuring that nominees possess the requisite competence, integrity, and character to serve the public interest.

Legislative scrutiny and administrative implications

The upcoming screening process will likely place a heavy focus on the previous records of the three ex-commissioners. Lawmakers are expected to scrutinise their past performance, specifically their ability to manage state resources and implement the administration’s developmental agenda effectively during their previous tenures.

The 10 special advisers will also face evaluation to determine if their specific expertise aligns with the strategic priorities of the Oyebanji administration. These advisers typically provide technical guidance in critical sectors such as economic planning, security, and community engagement.

The successful confirmation of these 13 nominees would provide the Governor with a more settled executive team, potentially reducing the learning curve for new policy implementation within the state’s various agencies.

The Ekiti House of Assembly has yet to announce the specific dates for the commencement of the screening exercises. Once the House convenes to address the request, the nominees will be summoned to appear before a committee to defend their suitability for the proposed roles.
