Governor Biodun Oyebanji has formally requested the Ekiti State House of Assembly to screen and confirm the reappointment of three former commissioners and 10 special advisers to his administration.
The request was conveyed through a letter sent to the legislative body, initiating the constitutional process required for the confirmation of high-level political appointees in the state. The move aims to solidify the Governor’s executive team as he continues to implement his administration’s developmental agenda.
The decision to reappoint three former commissioners and 10 special advisers suggests a focus on maintaining administrative continuity within the state government.
Legislative scrutiny and administrative continuity
Under the Ekiti State Constitution, the Governor’s authority to appoint members of the State Executive Council and high-level advisers is subject to the vetting and approval of the House of Assembly. This oversight mechanism ensures that nominees possess the necessary competence, integrity, and capacity to manage public resources and state affairs.
The upcoming screening sessions will require the nominees to appear before various House committees. During these exercises, lawmakers are expected to question the nominees on their previous performance in office, their professional qualifications, and their ability to contribute to the current administration’s economic and social priorities.
In Nigerian state politics, the reappointment of former officials is a common strategy used to preserve institutional memory. By bringing back experienced administrators who are already familiar with the state’s civil service structures and ongoing projects, a governor can reduce the time required for new personnel to become effective in their roles.
However, this approach often invites scrutiny from the legislature and civil society. Lawmakers may evaluate whether the returning officials are the best candidates for the current challenges facing Ekiti State or if the administration requires fresh perspectives to drive innovation in governance.
The Ekiti State House of Assembly is expected to schedule the screening dates in the coming days, which will determine whether these officials return to their previous positions within the executive arm.
