Oyo State Condemns Abduction of NYSC Members in Imo

The Oyo State government has expressed strong condemnation following the abduction of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Imo State, urging the families of the victims to remain calm.

In a statement regarding the incident, the government called for immediate security interventions to ensure the safe return of the corps members and to protect other youths currently serving in various parts of the country.

The incident has raised fresh alarms regarding the safety of corps members deployed to volatile regions. Many young graduates face significant risks, including kidnapping and banditry, while fulfilling their mandatory national service obligations.

Security challenges facing NYSC members

The Oyo government’s condemnation of the abduction of corps members in Imo follows rising concerns over the security landscape in the South-East. The abduction of young members, often unfamiliar with local terrains, has become a recurring threat to the national service programme.

Security experts suggest that corps members are frequently targeted due to their perceived vulnerability. Being often away from their primary support systems and living in new environments, they can become easy targets for criminal elements.

The NYSC scheme, established to foster national integration, relies on the safe movement of thousands of youths across state lines every year. When security lapses occur, it threatens the stability and public confidence in the entire programme.

The NYSC management has previously advised corps members to exercise caution, particularly regarding travel at night and movement in high-risk areas. However, the current situation in Imo State suggests that the security protocols for corps members may require urgent review to address evolving threats.

As of the time of writing, security agencies in Imo State have not provided specific details regarding the identity of the victims or the status of rescue operations. The families of the abducted members are awaiting official communication from the relevant authorities.
