Major General Mahmuda charges 2 Division troops to remain proactive

Major General Auwalu Mahmuda, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, has directed troops deployed in various operational areas to uphold strict professionalism and maintain a proactive approach to their duties.

The instruction, delivered to personnel under the division’s command, emphasises the need for soldiers to remain alert and take the initiative in responding to security threats. The GOC’s charge focuses on ensuring that troops do not merely react to incidents but actively work to prevent them through intelligence-led operations and heightened vigilance.

The 2 Division, which is headquartered in Ibadan, is responsible for the security of the South-West geopolitical zone. This region is vital to Nigeria’s economic stability, housing significant commercial hubs and critical infrastructure. Maintaining security in this zone is essential for protecting lives and ensuring the uninterrupted movement of goods and services across the region.

During his address to the troops, Major General Mahmuda noted that professionalism remains a non-negotiable aspect of military service. He stated that the conduct of soldiers in the field is central to the relationship between the armed forces and the communities they protect.

Security mandate in the South-West

Professionalism is considered a key factor in gaining public trust. For the 2 Division, this involves adhering to the rules of engagement and ensuring that operations are conducted with respect for human rights, which is critical in maintaining civilian cooperation during security tasks.

The emphasis on proactivity is intended to improve the division’s ability to intercept criminal elements before they can execute planned attacks. This involves a greater reliance on local intelligence and rapid response capabilities to address emerging security challenges within the South-West, including kidnapping and communal clashes.

The Nigerian Army has been undergoing various internal reforms aimed at improving the discipline and operational efficiency of its personnel. These reforms are part of a broader effort to address historical criticisms regarding the conduct of troops during internal security operations and to strengthen the bond between the military and the public.

The 2 Division is expected to implement these directives through intensified training and regular field inspections to ensure that the command’s standards are met at all levels of operation.
