Rangers and El-Kanemi exit CAF competitions after late goals

Nigerian football clubs Rangers International and El-Kanemi Warriors have been knocked out of their respective CAF club competitions following late goals conceded to North African opponents in decisive second-leg fixtures.

Both sides entered the second leg with a strong chance of progressing after securing favourable results in their opening matches. However, their continental ambitions ended in frustration as their opponents produced clinical performances in the closing stages of play to secure victory.

The exit of the Enugu-based Rangers and the Maiduguri-based El-Kanemi Warriors marks a setback for the presence of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) on the continental stage.

Challenges of North African dominance

The failure of the two Nigerian clubs to advance demonstrates the recurring difficulty local sides face when competing against the established powers of North Africa. Clubs from Egypt, Tunisia, and Morocco often maintain a higher level of tactical discipline and physical conditioning, which frequently becomes evident in the final minutes of high-pressure matches.

For Rangers International, the disappointment follows a first-leg performance that suggested they had the technical capacity to compete with their continental rivals. The late collapse in the second leg points to issues with game management and defensive concentration under sustained pressure from their visitors.

El-Kanemi Warriors experienced a similar fate. After showing promise in their initial encounter, the Maiduguri side was unable to defend their position against an opponent that exploited late lapses in concentration to seal the tie.

Beyond the immediate sporting disappointment, the exits carry financial consequences. Participation in CAF competitions provides Nigerian clubs with essential revenue through prize money, gate receipts, and increased visibility for potential sponsors. Losing out at this stage will require both clubs to refocus their resources on domestic competition within the NPFL.

The clubs are now expected to regroup and prepare for their upcoming domestic league fixtures as they seek to salvage their seasons at home.
