Segun Odegbami Urges FG to Monetise Nigeria’s Sports Sector

Nigerian football icon Segun Odegbami has called on the Federal Government to implement the necessary structural frameworks to transform the country’s sports sector into a sustainable economic driver.

Speaking on the potential for wealth creation within the industry, Odegbami urged stakeholders to move beyond theoretical discussions and focus on building the institutional capacity required to turn sporting talent into tangible revenue. He emphasised that the transition from potential to economic reality requires a combination of confidence, solid structures, and long-term commitment.

The appeal comes as the Nigerian government continues to seek ways to diversify the economy away from oil dependency. While sectors such as agriculture and mining are frequently highlighted, the commercialisation of sports remains an underutilised avenue for job creation and foreign exchange earnings.

Building institutional capacity in sports

Odegbami’s position suggests that the current approach to sports in Nigeria relies too heavily on sporadic successes rather than a deliberate, structured economic strategy. He argued that for the sector to contribute meaningfully to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), there must be a shift towards professionalising management, improving infrastructure, and creating investment-friendly environments for private players.

The legendary footballer made this case as he appealed to the Federal Government to turn sports into a national economic goldmine, challenging Nigerians to develop the commitment required to transform possibilities into opportunities.

The sports industry in Nigeria encompasses more than just football; it includes athletics, basketball, combat sports, and the growing esports market. However, without coordinated government policy and private sector engagement, these segments struggle to attract the level of capital seen in other emerging markets.

While the Ministry of Sports Development has previously discussed various reform agendas, the implementation of comprehensive policies that integrate sports with national economic planning remains a challenge. For the sector to reach its full potential, industry observers suggest that legislation must be enacted to protect investments in sports infrastructure and facilitate easier access to credit for sports-related enterprises.
