Spotify CEO Says AI Will Boost Art, Not Kill It

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek believes that artificial intelligence (AI) isn’t a threat to artists, it’s a tool that can help them be more creative. Speaking at an Open House event at Spotify’s headquarters in Stockholm, Ek addressed concerns about AI in music production.

Some worry that AI-generated tracks even those attributed to entirely fabricated artists could eventually sideline human musicians.

However, Ek sees AI as an opportunity to inspire more people to create music, not replace them. He expressed optimism about the future of creativity, stating, “I’m mostly optimistic and mostly very excited because we’re just at the beginning of understanding this future of creativity that we’re entering.”

Ek envisions a future where AI breaks language barriers, enabling creators worldwide to share their work with a global audience.

He imagines a platform where all 7 million Spotify podcasts, currently in numerous languages, can be translated into English in real time using AI, unlocking vast opportunities for global creators and audiences.

This advancement would revolutionize creativity, knowledge sharing, and entertainment.

While Ek acknowledges the “scary parts” of AI, such as deepfakes and unauthorized use of artists’ likenesses, he chooses to focus on the positive potential. He believes that

AI can democratize music creation, allowing individuals without formal training to produce music using simple voice commands. For instance, an artist could instruct AI to make a song “a little more upbeat” or “add some congas to the mix,” enhancing the creative process.

Spotify is also exploring AI’s role in podcasting. The company is trialing AI to translate podcasts into other languages, potentially allowing listeners to enjoy content in their preferred language. This development could make podcasts more accessible and inclusive.

Summarily, Daniel Ek views AI as a powerful ally for artists, offering new ways to create and share music. Rather than replacing human creativity, AI can amplify it, leading to a richer and more diverse musical landscape.
