Wizkid Becomes First African Artist to Surpass 11 Billion Spotify Streams

Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Wizkid has made history by becoming the first African artist to surpass 11 billion total streams on Spotify across all his credited appearances. The milestone further confirms his status as one of Africa’s most commercially successful music exports.

The achievement was announced on Tuesday by music analytics platform Charts Africa, which highlighted Wizkid’s dominance across multiple streaming milestones in African music history.

According to the platform, Wizkid is the first African artist to reach one billion, two billion, 10 billion, and now 11 billion cumulative Spotify streams. This latest record comes just days after the release of his single “State of Mind”, a collaboration with DJ Tunez, which generated over 685,000 global streams within its first 24 hours on Spotify.

Afrobeats’ Global Rise

Wizkid’s milestone underscores the growing international appeal of Afrobeats, a genre that has turned Nigerian artists into major players in the global digital music market. His rise on Spotify has been tied to several landmark moments, including his feature on “One Dance” with Drake and Kyla, which became the first song featuring an African artist to surpass one billion streams on the platform.

Other African artists are also breaking streaming records. Rema became the first African lead artist to reach one billion streams with “Calm Down”, while Tems became the first African female artist associated with a billion-stream song. Similarly, South African singer Tyla reached one billion streams as a solo artist with “Water”, highlighting the global reach of African pop music beyond Nigeria.

Recent Streaming Highlights

Earlier in 2026, Wizkid teamed up with Asake on “Jogodo”, which became the fastest African song to hit 10 million Spotify streams, achieving the feat in under a week. Data from Charts Africa showed the track recorded one of the fastest growth trajectories ever for an African release on Spotify.

These milestones reflect the growing influence of African music on major digital platforms, with Nigerian artists consistently dominating global Afrobeats consumption. Spotify has acknowledged the strong engagement of younger audiences, particularly among Nigeria’s Gen Z, who have propelled artists like Wizkid, Burna Boy, Davido, Asake, and Drake to the top of streaming charts.

Wizkid’s new record is not just a personal achievement but a sign of African music’s rising power on the world stage, cementing his position as a leading ambassador for the continent’s vibrant sound.
