Three women were killed and another person sustained injuries when gunmen launched a violent attack on a mining site at Rakum community in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State on Monday.
Local community sources reported that the armed assailants stormed the operational mining location at approximately 4:30 pm. Without warning, the attackers opened fire indiscriminately on the workers present at the site, resulting in the immediate deaths of the three female workers.
According to details from the initial community accounts of the incident, one other individual suffered gunshot wounds during the onslaught and was subsequently rushed to a medical facility for urgent treatment.
Plateau State and other parts of the North Central region have frequently grappled with security challenges affecting rural communities, farming settlements, and informal economic sites. Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, in particular, has recorded multiple security incidents over the years, testing the capacity of local law enforcement and military task forces deployed to maintain peace in the area.
Informal mining sites across the country often present security vulnerabilities due to their remote locations and the lack of immediate perimeter protection or armed security personnel.
