President Bola Tinubu has commissioned the Zaria-Kano section of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway, marking a key advancement in the federal government’s efforts to upgrade the nation’s arterial road networks.
The completion of this third section is expected to significantly improve road safety by providing better driving conditions. By addressing the hazards associated with damaged road surfaces, the new infrastructure is intended to reduce the frequency of avoidable accidents and the loss of lives along this corridor.
Motorists travelling between the Federal Capital Territory and the commercial centre of Kano can now expect smoother transit. For years, travellers have faced challenges ranging from deep potholes to uneven terrain, which have historically contributed to vehicle damage and fatal collisions.
Economic connectivity and safety improvements
The Zaria-Kano stretch is a critical component of the larger expressway that links Abuja, Kaduna, Zaria, and Kano. This route serves as a primary artery for the movement of goods, agricultural produce, and passengers across Northern Nigeria.
The new road is expected to facilitate faster movement of freight, potentially reducing the cost of logistics for businesses operating between the North-West and the central region. Improved transit times are often directly linked to lower vehicle maintenance costs and increased efficiency in regional supply chains.
The benefits of the project were highlighted during the commissioning of the Zaria-Kano section of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Expressway, where the importance of better driving conditions was emphasised.
Infrastructure development on this corridor is also viewed as a way to support national security. Well-maintained road networks allow for quicker response times by security agencies patrolling the region, which has faced various security challenges in recent years.
The federal government’s focus on completing this section follows prolonged calls from transport unions and commerce stakeholders for a more reliable and safer link between the major cities of the North.
