Troost-Ekong Speaks on Super Eagles’ Reported Boycott Over Unpaid Bonuses
Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has spoken out to clear the air on reports that the team boycotted training over bonus disputes.
The defender explained that the players’ recent decision not to train was not an act of rebellion but a response to long-standing unpaid bonuses and allowances dating as far back as 2019.
According to Troost-Ekong, the team is not asking for any new or special payments ahead of their crucial World Cup playoff match against Gabon. Instead, their concern is simply about receiving what they are rightfully owed from previous matches and tournaments.
“Once a resolution is found, we will be the first to confirm. Any other statement or demand apart from the rightful request is false,” Ekong said, emphasizing that the team remains focused on their mission to qualify for the World Cup.
Sources close to the team revealed that the decision to skip training was meant to draw attention to the unpaid allowances and not to cause disruption.
The players are optimistic that the issue will be resolved soon so they can return to full training in Rabat and continue preparations for the important fixture.
Despite the setback, Troost-Ekong’s calm clarification appears to have eased tensions, reminding fans that the Super Eagles’ commitment to representing Nigeria remains strong—only clouded by the frustration of waiting for what is long overdue.
