Nigerian professionals seeking skilled employment in the United States can target companies with established records of sponsoring H-1B visas.

However, the H-1B programme is not a newly created or Nigeria-specific route. It is an existing employment visa that allows eligible US employers to hire qualified foreign professionals for specialised positions.

These roles usually require advanced knowledge and at least a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in a field related to the job. Common H-1B occupations include software engineering, data science, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, accounting, consulting, medicine and semiconductor engineering.

A 2026 analysis by immigration platform Ellis identified several major employers with strong histories of filing H-1B petitions. Its database draws from US Citizenship and Immigration Services and Department of Labor records covering thousands of employers. A company’s presence on the list does not mean every vacancy offers sponsorship, so applicants must check the requirements for each position.

Top 10 US Companies With Strong H-1B Sponsorship Records

1. Google

Google regularly sponsors foreign professionals for specialised roles across software engineering, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity, product management and research.

Ellis records more than 36,000 historical H-1B filings linked to Google, alongside a significant number of permanent labour certification filings. Applicants should search Google’s careers portal for roles that match their education and professional experience.

2. Amazon

Amazon is one of the largest H-1B petition filers in the United States.

The company recruits skilled workers across Amazon Web Services, logistics technology, artificial intelligence, software development, data engineering, advertising and e-commerce operations.

Ellis describes Amazon.com Services as the largest single sponsor by historical H-1B filing volume, although Amazon operates through several legal entities that may file petitions separately.

3. Microsoft

Microsoft hires international professionals for positions in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, software engineering, gaming and product development.

The employer must also meet US immigration and labour requirements, including paying the required wage and filing the necessary documents with federal authorities.

Step 2: Submit a Strong Job Application

Your application should include a US-style résumé tailored to the vacancy.

Highlight measurable achievements, technical competencies, professional certifications and experience directly connected to the job description.

Applicants should avoid adding unnecessary personal details such as age, religion, marital status or a passport photograph unless the employer specifically requests them.

Step 3: Receive an Employment Offer

The standard H-1B route is employer-led.

A prospective employee cannot normally enter the H-1B lottery independently. The sponsoring employer or its authorised representative must submit the electronic registration and later file the petition.

Applicants should be cautious of individuals who demand money in exchange for guaranteed H-1B selection or claim they can sell sponsorship without a genuine job.

Step 4: Employer Completes H-1B Registration

For positions subject to the annual numerical limit, the employer registers the applicant during the official USCIS registration period.

The registration fee is $215 for each beneficiary. This registration is submitted by the prospective employer or its representative, not directly by the employee.

For the fiscal year 2027 H-1B cap, the initial registration window ran from March 4 to March 19, 2026. USCIS announced that the initial selection process had been completed on March 31, 2026.

Step 5: Employer Files the Labor Condition Application

After selection, the employer files a Labor Condition Application with the US Department of Labor.

Step 6: Employer Submits Form I-129

After receiving a certified Labor Condition Application, the employer files Form I-129, Petition for a Nonimmigrant Worker, with USCIS.

The petition typically contains the job description, employment terms, the worker’s qualifications, supporting company documents and the certified labour application.

Selection during registration does not guarantee approval. USCIS must still determine whether the employer, employee and position meet the programme’s requirements.

Step 7: Complete the Visa Application in Nigeria

After USCIS approves the petition, a Nigerian applicant outside the United States must complete Form DS-160 and follow the visa appointment instructions issued by the US diplomatic mission.

The applicant will generally need a valid passport, the DS-160 confirmation page, the applicable payment receipt, petition details and the Form I-797 approval notice. A digital photograph is uploaded during the DS-160 process, while a printed photograph may be required when the upload fails.

Approval of the employer’s petition does not automatically guarantee that a visa will be issued. The consular officer must still determine the applicant’s eligibility.
