13 Major Ongoing Roads Under Tinubu So Far

Since taking office in 2023, President Bola Tinubu has prioritized road infrastructure as a key part of his administration’s development agenda. While some of these projects were initiated by previous governments, Tinubu’s leadership has accelerated their completion through contract adjustments, increased funding, and revised timelines.

Others are brand-new projects designed to enhance connectivity, boost economic activity, and improve trade across Nigeria. Here’s a look at some of the major road projects currently in progress under the Tinubu administration.

Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway

One of the most talked-about projects, this 700-kilometer coastal highway will connect nine states from Lagos to Calabar. The first phase, covering 47.7 kilometers within Lagos State, began in March 2024 and is expected to be completed by mid-2025. The project, built under a public-private partnership, is designed to boost trade and tourism along Nigeria’s coastline.

Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano Road

This 164-kilometer expressway is crucial for linking the Federal Capital Territory with the northern states of Kaduna and Kano. Initially awarded to Julius Berger in 2017, the project faced significant delays until the Tinubu government injected fresh funding. With a revised budget of over N740 billion and a renewed commitment to monthly financing, completion is now expected by 2026.

9th Mile-Oturkpo-Makurdi Road

The dualization of this route will ease movement between Enugu, Benue, and the northern states. This strategic project was included in the government’s priority list, with funds released to ensure steady progress. The road will serve as an alternative link for commuters traveling to Abuja and beyond.

Sokoto-Badagry Highway

Stretching over 1,000 kilometers, this ambitious project aims to link Nigeria’s far north to the coastal city of Badagry in Lagos. It is being built with a six-lane design and will feature a rail line at its center. The first section of the road has already been flagged off in Sokoto, with concrete paving technology being used to enhance durability.

Enugu-Onitsha Expressway

This dual-carriageway is being reconstructed under a tax credit scheme, with MTN leading its financing. Previously stalled due to cost variations, the project is now moving forward at a steady pace, with a target completion date of May 2026. The road will enhance transportation across the Southeast, improving access between Enugu and Anambra states.

Benin-Asaba Superhighway

Flagged off in early 2025, this project is expected to modernize travel between Benin City and Asaba. Built as a dual-carriageway with solar-powered streetlights, the road is being fully financed under a public-private partnership and is set to be completed within 30 months.

Abuja-Lokoja-Benin Road

A vital link between the capital city and the southern states, the Abuja-Lokoja-Benin Road project has undergone major restructuring. Initially awarded in 2012, it faced numerous setbacks before being re-awarded in 2024 under the Tinubu administration. Now, with a budget of N305 billion, work has resumed with concrete technology to ensure longevity.

Oyo-Ogbomoso Road

A key transport link within Oyo State, this project has seen multiple delays over the years. The Tinubu administration took decisive action by terminating the initial contract and awarding a new one at N147 billion. Work is now ongoing to fast-track its completion.

Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway

A major highway linking the Southeast and South-South regions, this expressway is undergoing reconstruction in phases. The section between Umuahia and Aba is expected to be completed by June 2025, with the government ensuring adequate budgetary support to avoid further delays.

Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

One of Nigeria’s busiest highways, this expressway is being expanded and upgraded to improve travel times and safety. Sections built by Julius Berger and RCC are nearing completion, with the final stretch expected to be commissioned in mid-2025. Once completed, the government plans to introduce tolling to ensure its long-term maintenance.

Bodo-Bonny Road

Originally awarded in 2014, this road connecting Bonny Island to mainland Rivers State has faced numerous funding challenges. However, with a fresh N280 billion approval under the Tinubu government, the project is now back on track, with a revised completion date set for late 2025.

Second Niger Bridge Access Road

While the Second Niger Bridge itself was largely completed under the previous administration, the final phase—constructing its access roads—is now being fast-tracked. This 17.5-kilometer stretch will fully integrate the bridge into the national road network, easing travel between the South-East and South-South.
