2027: Is PDP’s Zoning to the South the Right Way to Beat the APC?
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) recently decided to limit its 2027 presidential ticket to candidates from Southern Nigeria. This marks a change from 2023, when the party left the ticket open to any region.
The move, confirmed by the PDP’s National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja, follows calls from party elders and seems aimed at boosting the chances of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, a leading Southern contender.
PDP’s New Zoning Decision
At its 101st NEC meeting, the PDP agreed that only Southern members could contest the 2027 primary. The party also moved its national convention to Ibadan, Governor Makinde’s home base, instead of Kano. Leaders say this honours the vision of the party’s founders and promotes regional balance within the PDP.
Why Some Support Zoning to the South
Supporters argue zoning shows respect for the party’s roots and helps unite Southern delegates behind a single candidate. By narrowing the field, the PDP can avoid costly internal battles and present a united front against the APC’s Southern ticket.
Why Some Oppose Zoning
Other voices warn that zoning by region risks ignoring talent from the North and East. Critics argue that the party needs the best, most qualified leader, regardless of origin,to tackle insecurity, create jobs, and improve living standards. They say zoning could alienate Northern voters and weaken the PDP’s national appeal.
Can Zoning Help Defeat the APC?
In 2023, the APC zoned its ticket to the South West by endorsing President Tinubu, also a Southerner, and went on to win the election.
The PDP hopes to repeat that success by matching the APC’s regional strategy. Yet the APC has already begun its 2027 planning, banking on Tinubu’s popularity and strong party machinery. For zoning to work, the PDP must choose a Southern candidate who can draw votes across all regions, not just the South.
Beyond Zoning: What Really Matters
Regional zoning alone will not win votes. Nigeria’s next president must offer clear solutions on security, the economy, healthcare, and education.
The PDP must back its zoning decision with a strong campaign message, a capable candidate, and an effective grassroots organisation. Only then can the party hope to outfox the APC in 2027.
In the end, zoning the ticket to the South may help the PDP simplify its primary and energise Southern voters. But true victory will depend on unity across the whole country and a candidate who can reach every Nigerian,North, South, East, and West.
