40 Senators Who May Lose Their Seats Ahead of 2027 Elections
Nigeria’s 10th Senate may be heading for one of its biggest shake-ups in recent years, as no fewer than 40 serving senators are unlikely to return to the Red Chamber after failing to secure return tickets ahead of the 2027 elections.
The expected turnover cuts across the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party, African Democratic Congress, Nigeria Democratic Congress, and other political blocs.
It also reflects the growing influence of governors, party structures, and shifting alliances in determining who survives Nigeria’s intense electoral cycle.
Several senators are losing ground because of governorship ambitions, while others have been displaced by powerful political interests in their states.
In Adamawa, the fate of all three senators remains uncertain: Senator Aminu Iya Abbas is linked to a governorship bid, Senator Amos Yohanna faces pressure from Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, and Senator Binos Dauda Yaroe is battling fresh challenges after defecting to the ADC.
In Delta, Senator Ned Nwoko’s re-election bid appears threatened after former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa reportedly entered the APC senatorial race.
In Imo, Senator Osita Izunaso may lose out as Governor Hope Uzodinma is said to be positioning himself for the Imo West ticket. Gombe Central may also witness a change, with Senator Danjuma Goje reportedly losing influence within the state’s APC structure.
Governorship ambitions are also reshaping Bauchi, Oyo, and Ogun. Senators Abdul Ahmed Ningi and Shehu Buba Umar are linked to moves for the governorship in Bauchi, while Abdulfatai Buhari and Sharafadeen Alli face similar pressures in Oyo.
In Ogun, Senator Gbenga Daniel has reportedly been sidelined, while Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola appears focused on the governorship race.
Other affected lawmakers include senators from Benue, Ondo, Bayelsa, Plateau, Kaduna, Kano, FCT, Kogi, and Kwara, where party primaries, opposition strength, and state-level power blocs are altering political calculations.
At a time when Nigeria faces economic pressures, security challenges, and major governance questions, a Senate with fewer experienced lawmakers may struggle to maintain consistency in lawmaking and oversight.
