Meet Joseph Lumbahe, the Man Behind Africa’s AI Revolution

Joseph Lumbahe is at the cutting edge of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and technology, driving innovation across the African continent. From co-founding transformative ventures like Bus54 and CaliVision to leading global AI efforts at Microsoft, Lumbahe’s journey is a remarkable story of visionary leadership and technological breakthroughs.

In this interview with Business Elites Africa, he reflects on key milestones in his career, the challenges and opportunities within Africa’s tech ecosystem, and his vision for the future of AI in Africa and beyond.

How did you get to where you are today, and what inspired it?

My journey began with a deep fascination for technology during my formative years. When I began my professional career in South Africa, I recognised the immense potential of technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), to solve local challenges, given the vast amount of available data. This realisation fueled my passion for AI and motivated me to pursue both my studies and career in this field.

A major turning point came when I co-founded Bus54, a pioneering mobility tech venture aimed at digitally transforming intercity bus transportation across Africa’s 54 nations. Later, I also co-founded CaliVision, a venture leveraging AI to revolutionise fitness and calisthenics.

My transition from Aizatron Group, where I served as Global Manager and Lead AI Engineer, to becoming Microsoft’s first Senior AI Technology Specialist within the Application Development arm of their new global technical solution expert team for Southern Africa marked a pivotal milestone. At Microsoft, I’ve been able to harness AI on a global scale, with a focus on driving impactful solutions across the CEMA region. This reflects my ongoing mission to innovate, enhance industries, and improve lives through AI.

Can you share a specific moment when you realised you were on the verge of something big?

One such moment was when we integrated AI technology into CaliVision, enabling personalised training insights for users. The seamless experience we provided set us apart in the fitness tech space.

Another key milestone was when Bus54 was selected as the Western Africa Regional winner for the Global Startup Awards Africa, validating our innovative approach to transportation.

The recognition I received, such as the South Africa President’s Award for Technology Excellence in 2023, and being awarded as one of the Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans within the Technology & Innovation category, reinforced that my work was making a meaningful impact.

These accolades confirmed the strides we were taking in reshaping industries. From there, I focused on building strategic partnerships with influencers and government entities to ensure both ventures could scale sustainably and continue to impact fitness and transportation on a global level.

What unique qualities do you believe have been critical to your success in an increasingly competitive world?

Resilience, adaptability, and visionary thinking have been the cornerstones of my success. The fast-evolving landscape of AI demands not just technical expertise but also the ability to anticipate future trends.

These qualities allowed me to push my former organisation’s AI division to the forefront in Africa, making it a leader in AI-driven solutions.

Now, at Microsoft, I leverage cutting-edge technologies like Azure OpenAI and Azure AI Services, continuing to integrate AI solutions into business workflows. To consistently sharpen these skills, I engage in continuous learning, participate in thought leadership platforms, and surround myself with forward-thinking individuals who challenge my perspectives. This approach keeps me agile and open to new innovations.

How have you leveraged your influence to not only achieve personal success but also create change in your community or industry?

I’ve been fortunate to leverage my role as a Regional Ambassador for the South African AI Association (SAAIA) to advocate for the responsible and ethical use of AI, while collaborating with government entities to shape policies that foster innovation and safeguard society. Beyond my professional and entrepreneurial efforts, I’ve played an instrumental role in helping startups thrive within Alberta’s Plug and Play Tech Center ecosystem. Additionally, as an Obama Leader in Africa, I’m part of a network of changemakers dedicated to making a lasting impact in our communities, with a special focus on underserved areas and equitable access to technology.

In what ways do you believe African entrepreneurs and leaders are reshaping global perceptions of the continent?

African entrepreneurs and leaders are reshaping outdated perceptions by driving innovation, solving both local and global challenges, and building globally competitive enterprises. Through groundbreaking technologies and sustainable business models, they are demonstrating that Africa is not just a source of raw materials, but a thriving hub of creativity and advanced solutions.

What is your vision for the future of AI, and how do you plan to contribute to that future?

My vision is for AI to become a democratising force that addresses key challenges like healthcare, education, and transportation across Africa. I’m committed to advocating for AI literacy and responsible practices to ensure Africa is a creator, not just a consumer, of AI technology. Through my professional career, I’m focused on contributing by integrating responsible AI into various industries across the continent.

If you could leave one lesson for the next generation of African leaders, what would it be?

The most valuable lesson is that time is the most valuable asset, and it should not be wasted. The next generation of African leaders must also embrace resilience and adaptability. Africa presents unique challenges, but within those challenges lie tremendous opportunities.

The key is to persist, innovate continuously, and never lose sight of the bigger picture, even when faced with obstacles. I embody this lesson by consistently pushing boundaries, whether through scaling my ventures, advancing Africa’s AI landscape through my role at Microsoft, or engaging with global networks like the Obama Leadership Network.

I have faced numerous challenges along the way, but my commitment to innovation and adaptability has allowed me to turn those challenges into opportunities. My journey is a testament to the power of resilience and the importance of using time wisely in both my personal and professional life.
