Abacha’s Daughter Confirms Her Divorce From Governor Buni, Declares ‘I Am Not Married’
Gumsu Abacha, the late Nigerian military head of state General Sani Abacha’s daughter has publicly announced her divorce from Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni. The announcement was made through a post on her social media page, signaling the end of her high-profile marriage.
Abacha’s daughter took to her social media platform to express her newfound freedom with the words, “Emancipation… Liberation.” The post, which quickly garnered attention, led to a revelation in the comments section where she responded to being referred to as the First Lady of Yobe State. Gumsu firmly declared, “I am not married.”
The divorce marks the end of a significant chapter in Gumsu’s life. She tied the knot with Governor Buni on April 14, 2021, in a ceremony held at the Abuja residence of her elder brother, Mohammed Abacha. The wedding was a notable event attended by several dignitaries, including the then Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Hameed Ali, and other prominent figures.
Gumsu, who was previously married to Cameroonian billionaire Bayero Mohamadou for 20 years before their separation in 2020, had entered her second marriage with Governor Buni amidst much fanfare. The union was celebrated with a dowry of 24 gold coins, reflecting the prominence of both families involved.
However, an inside source confirmed to reporters that the marriage between Gumsu Abacha and Governor Buni ended a few months ago, ending their brief union.
This development comes amid other challenging times for Governor Buni, who recently faced an attack on his convoy by suspected Boko Haram insurgents, resulting in the unfortunate loss of two policemen.
The divorce and the public declaration by Abacha’s daughter have sparked widespread interest, with many Nigerians reacting to the news on social media platforms. Gumsu Abacha’s statement and her decision to publicly affirm her current marital status have been seen as a bold move, indicative of her journey towards liberation and self-assertion.
