Canada High Commission Operations Suspended in Nigeria Amid Security Concerns

The Canada High Commission has declared an indefinite suspension of its operations in Nigeria, citing the volatile security situation as the primary concern. This announcement was accompanied by a travel advisory urging Canadians to avoid non-essential travel to the region. The advisory reflects the ongoing issues within the country, including the risk of crime, inter-communal unrest, armed conflicts, and kidnappings.

This suspension follows a distressing incident at the Canada High Commission’s premises in Abuja, where a fire, reportedly caused by a diesel tank explosion, led to two fatalities and inflicted injuries on others. While the embassy’s closure is not directly linked to this event, it underscores the current state of concern regarding overall safety and security.

The Canadian Foreign Minister, Melanie Joly, addressed the incident on the social media platform X, confirming the explosion and extending condolences to those affected. Simultaneously, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, through his spokesperson, expressed his condolences and called for prayers for the deceased, hoping for a swift recovery for those injured.

As the situation unfolds, Canadian authorities remain vigilant, advising nationals in Nigeria to stay current with the Canada High Commission and to maintain a high level of caution.
