Davido Defends His Comments About Nigeria’s Economy

Afrobeats star Davido, whose real name is David Adeleke, has responded to criticism after his recent comments about Nigeria’s economy, saying some people are trying to cancel his December show because of his remarks.

Speaking on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, November 27, 2024, Davido dismissed the backlash and defended himself as a proud representative of Nigeria.

“They’re saying they’ll cancel my show because of my interview… loooool. I don’t have to perform in Nigeria,” he wrote.

What Did Davido Say?

The controversy began after Davido appeared on The Big Homies House podcast. He told Black Americans not to move to Nigeria, saying the country suffers from poor leadership, high oil prices, and a weak economy.

“The economy is in shambles,” he said, adding that it’s ironic for an oil-producing country like Nigeria to have higher fuel prices than nations that import oil.

Davido’s comments caused a stir, with some people accusing him of making Nigeria look bad internationally.

TV presenter Akashat Ny’mat said that while Davido’s statements might be true, they came at the wrong time.

“When a big celebrity like Davido says this, it’s like telling foreign investors not to come,” she explained.

Despite the criticism, Davido didn’t back down. He insisted that he represents Nigeria in his own way.

“You’re all upset because we’re the real ambassadors,” he posted, adding that he liked how his voice sounded during the podcast.

While some people are angry with him, many fans still see him as a proud Nigerian and a global icon.

It’s unclear whether his December show will be canceled, but Davido’s comments have started a larger conversation about Nigeria’s economy and leadership.
