Nigerian startup founders can now apply for the 2026 ECOWAS Startup Awards, a competition that will hand $65,000 in cash prizes to three winning businesses.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has opened applications for the second edition of the competition, and they close on August 31, 2026, at 10:59 p.m. GMT.The winner takes home $30,000. The first runner-up gets $20,000, and the second runner-up gets $15,000. Beyond the cash, selected founders gain access to investors, mentorship, and a six-month acceleration programme.
Any eligible startup across ECOWAS’ 12 member states, Nigeria included can enter. ECOWAS designed the programme to find and support innovative businesses that can grow beyond their home markets and across West Africa.
Six Sectors That Can Apply
The awards will pick startups from six priority areas:
- FinTech
- AgriTech and Food Systems
- HealthTech
- EdTech and Skills Development
- CleanTech, Climate and Green Innovation
- Tourism, Hospitality and TravelTech
ECOWAS plans to bring 60 startups from across the region into the programme.
This edition follows the first West African Startup Awards, which ECOWAS held in Niamey, Niger, in November 2021. Startups from across the region joined that inaugural event, according to ECOWAS records.
Who Can Apply
Nigerian founders need to clear several requirements before they apply. You must:
- hold citizenship in an ECOWAS member state;
- run a startup registered and based in an ECOWAS country;
- have operated for at least two years;
- have a working product or service;
- show market traction or clear potential to scale; and
- provide the required application documents.
ECOWAS especially encourages women-led startups to apply.
Pay attention to that two-year requirement, it matters. This competition doesn’t target founders sitting on an idea that hasn’t hit the market yet. You need to show a functioning business already exists.

What Nigerian Founders Need to Submit
You’ll apply through the official ECOWAS Startup Awards 2026 portal, and you’ll need to create an account before you can complete the application.
Gather these materials first:
- an ECOWAS-approved identity document or national passport for the lead founder;
- a recent passport photograph;
- business registration documents;
- two years of financial statements, management accounts, or projections;
- a business plan;
- a pitch deck; and
- a one-minute pitch video.
Keep your business plan under 10 pages and your pitch deck under 10 slides, the portal enforces both limits.
You can save an unfinished application and come back to finish it before you submit.
Benefits for Selected Startups
Selected startups join virtual masterclasses from September 21 to September 25, 2026.
The programme then moves in person to Abuja from September 28 to September 30, with the regional finals landing on September 30.
Beyond the prize money, ECOWAS offers participants regional exposure and investor access. Winners also enter a six-month acceleration and mentorship programme.
That matters if your startup needs more than just funding. Investor meetings, regional networks, and market exposure can help you find customers or expansion opportunities beyond Nigeria.
How to Apply
Apply through the official ECOWAS Startup Awards portal before August 31. Prepare your financial statements, business plan, and pitch materials before you start the submission, don’t try to assemble them mid-application.
Make sure your pitch clearly shows:
- the problem you’re solving;
- how your product solves it;
- evidence that demand already exists;
- how your company makes money;
- the size of your potential market;
- why your company can scale; and
- your team’s ability to execute.
With innovation worth 20% of the score and business viability built into the assessment, a slick presentation alone won’t carry you.
If you already have at least two years of operating history and measurable traction, this competition gives you a real shot at non-dilutive capital and a door into a wider West African market.
