FirstBank and Visa Launch New Debit Cards to Boost Cashless Payments
First Bank of Nigeria Limited and Visa have unveiled two new payment cards to boost digital transactions in Nigeria. The products include a Visa Signature card for premium customers and a Naira Visa Debit Card for everyday users. The launch took place at FirstBank’s headquarters in Lagos on May 15, 2026.
The move aims to support Nigeria’s shift from cash to electronic payments and widen financial access across income groups.
Two Cards, Two Purposes
The Visa Signature card targets affluent Nigerians. It offers perks like global travel benefits, curated merchant offers, and lifestyle privileges. The card ties into Visa’s global network, giving holders flexibility for international spending.
The Naira Visa Debit Card focuses on daily transactions. Priced affordably at around N1,000, it works on ATMs, POS terminals, and online platforms. Users can pay for everyday needs like groceries, bills, and shopping without carrying cash.
FirstBank says the debit card will make cashless payments more accessible and reliable for millions of Nigerians.
Supporting Cashless Policy
At the event, Chuma Ezirim, Group Executive for eBusiness & Retail Products at FirstBank, said the cards aim to simplify transactions and enhance customer experience across segments.
Visa’s Vice President for West Africa, Andrew Uaboi, described the Naira Visa Debit Card as a way to strengthen Nigeria’s payments system and extend electronic payment options to everyday consumers.
Both executives said the launch aligns with efforts to reduce reliance on cash and support the Central Bank of Nigeria’s cashless economy goals.
What This Means for Customers
FirstBank’s existing Visa offerings already include a range of products like Visa Infinite, Visa Gold, and prepaid cards. The new additions create a more complete card portfolio covering basic, everyday payment needs and premium services.
Consumers now have more choices that suit different lifestyles and financial needs. Access to digital payments could accelerate as more people move away from cash.
