Obi Becomes NDC’s Sole Presidential Aspirant for 2027
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially closed the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for its 2027 presidential ticket, and indications show that Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, is the only aspirant to have purchased the forms.
While the sale of presidential forms has ended, the party extended the deadline by one week for other elective positions, including governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Houses of Assembly seats. The new deadline for these positions is midnight on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
According to NDC National Secretary Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, screening for all aspirants who submitted and completed their forms will begin on Tuesday, May 19, and conclude on Tuesday, May 26, 2026. The collection and submission of Nomination Forms for cleared aspirants will take place between May 20 and May 26, 2026.
The party stressed that no further extensions would be granted and urged all aspirants to follow the guidelines strictly. Aspirants are required to appear for screening and pre-qualification interviews at designated venues nationwide with all relevant documents, including educational certificates, birth certificate or age declaration, passport photographs, voter’s card, NDC membership card, and curriculum vitae. All submissions must be in six copies.
The screening process will evaluate aspirants based on the wishes of the electorate, local factors, competence, character, and capacity. The party also instructed the committee to consider affirmative action policies for women, youth, and persons living with disabilities.
Only candidates cleared through the screening process will be allowed to purchase nomination forms. The NDC also encouraged aspirants to embrace consensus-building to strengthen party unity.
With no other aspirants filing for the presidential ticket, Peter Obi, who recently joined the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), is expected to become the party’s consensus presidential candidate for 2027.
