Continental Resources, the US energy firm led by billionaire Harold Hamm, is investing $4 billion to develop the Vaca Muerta shale formation in Argentina.
The investment is being executed through the acquisition of a 50% stake in Phoenix Global Resources, an independent operator already active in the Neuquén Basin.
The move marks a significant international expansion for Continental Resources, which has spent decades pioneering hydraulic fracturing techniques within the United States.
According to company disclosures, the $4 billion capital commitment will be directed toward an aggressive drilling and completion programme designed to scale production in one of the world’s most prolific unconventional resource plays.
Harold Hamm, who is widely credited with helping spark the US shale revolution, intends to apply the operational efficiencies and technical expertise developed in the Bakken and other US basins to the Argentine landscape.
The partnership with Phoenix Global Resources provides Continental with immediate access to existing acreage and operational infrastructure, reducing the lead time required to begin full-scale production.
Vaca Muerta’s Role in Argentina’s Energy Exports
The Vaca Muerta formation is the second-largest shale gas reserve and fourth-largest shale oil reserve globally. For years, the basin’s potential has been hampered by a lack of infrastructure and restrictive capital controls in Argentina.
However, recent shifts in economic policy under the administration of President Javier Milei have aimed to attract foreign direct investment by deregulating the energy sector and easing export restrictions.
The Argentine government has prioritised the expansion of pipeline capacity to move gas and oil from the remote Neuquén province to coastal ports and domestic industrial hubs.
Continental Resources enters the market at a time when Argentina is striving to transition from a net energy importer to a major global exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and crude oil.
The $4 billion commitment from Hamm represents a strong vote of confidence in the stability of the Argentine investment climate and the commercial viability of its unconventional reserves.
Industry analysts suggest that the entry of a seasoned US operator like Continental could accelerate the adoption of “super-pad” drilling techniques, which allow multiple wells to be drilled from a single location to lower costs.
Phoenix Global Resources has previously reported significant success in achieving high initial production rates in the basin, but required a partner with substantial balance-sheet strength to fund the next phase of industrialisation.
The transaction is expected to result in a streamlined operational structure, combining Continental’s technical playbook with Phoenix’s local geological data and regulatory relationships.
The Continental Resources strategy involves targeting high-grade “sweet spots” within the shale to maximise the return on capital invested.
This expansion also diversifies the billionaire’s portfolio, reducing reliance on the US domestic market while securing a foothold in a region with immense untapped potential.
The next phase of the development will involve the procurement of additional drilling rigs and the expansion of gathering systems to handle increased flow rates.
Confirmation on the specific timeline for the first wave of new wells is expected following the finalisation of the equity transfer and regulatory approvals from Argentine energy authorities.
