In 2023, the Nigerian film industry continued to shine as a beacon of entertainment in Anglophone West Africa. According to the latest figures from FilmOne, a leading distributor and cinema chain operator, Nigeria has asserted its dominance with 19 out of the top 20 highest-grossing cinemas located within its borders. This remarkable achievement underscores the country’s deep-seated love for films and its vibrant cinema culture.

Lagos, Nigeria’s dynamic economic powerhouse, stood out as the central hub for cinema enthusiasts. With six of the top ten highest-grossing cinemas nestled in its bustling streets, the city has proven to be the heart of the region’s movie-going experience. From the upscale neighborhoods to the busy commercial districts, Lagosians flock to the cinemas in droves, eager to catch the latest releases.

The leader of the pack, Filmhouse Lekki, with its six modern screens, raked in an impressive N475 million in 2023 alone. Not far behind, Silverbird Cinema at Ikeja City Mall, boasting five screens, garnered N463.7 million, showcasing the high demand for cinematic experiences in the area.

  • Filmhouse Lekki: With state-of-the-art facilities, this cinema drew in the highest earnings, making it the crown jewel of Lagos’s cinema scene.
  • Silverbird Ikeja City Mall: A favorite among families and young adults alike, it continues to be a key player in the industry.
  • Ebonylife Cinemas: Also in Lagos, this cinema is rapidly gaining popularity for its luxurious viewing experiences, earning N453.4 million.
  • Kada Benin: This cinema is not just a place to watch movies but a cultural gathering spot in Benin City, with earnings of N312.8 million.
  • Silverbird Accra Mall: Representing Ghana, this cinema stands as a testament to the growing love for films in the region, with earnings of N282.3 million.

The Bigger Picture

FilmOne reports that the top 25 cinemas in Anglophone West Africa are responsible for 75% of the total box office revenues in the area, emphasizing the significant impact these venues have on the film industry’s economy. 

This dominance not only highlights the cultural importance of cinema in the region but also points to a thriving business model that continues to grow year after year.
