Jimoh Ibrahim: Tinubu’s Economic Reforms Won’t Be Reversed
At the IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, DC, Nigeria’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Jimoh Ibrahim, declared that the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would remain in place despite the current economic difficulties faced by the country.
Speaking during a parliamentary session on the sidelines of the event, Ibrahim emphasized that while the reforms may bring short-term challenges, they are essential for Nigeria’s long-term economic growth and prosperity. He reassured Nigerians that the benefits of these reforms would soon become apparent.
Ibrahim described the reforms as vital for repositioning the country’s economy, highlighting that the policy shifts are necessary to ensure sustainable growth. He acknowledged the hardship these measures might cause but firmly stated that they are indispensable for building a more robust and resilient economy in the future.
The ambassador also touched on the global economic landscape, linking Nigeria’s reforms to broader geopolitical developments. Specifically, he pointed out the significance of the Strait of Hormuz, a key corridor for global oil and LNG supply. He warned that disruptions in this region, especially due to tensions with Iran, could have far-reaching effects on global trade and energy markets, potentially triggering price volatility and disrupting economic stability in major economies like China, India, Japan, and South Korea.
On the domestic front, Ibrahim stressed the importance of legislative support in mitigating the impact of the reforms. He called for stronger collaboration between Nigeria’s executive and legislative branches to address the ongoing economic challenges.
Drawing attention to the effective cooperation within Nigeria’s parliamentary system under Senate President Godswill Akpabio, he urged lawmakers worldwide to adopt similar collaborative approaches to combat poverty and economic hardship.
Ibrahim also showed the importance of international collaboration among parliamentarians, underscoring that global peace and cooperation are essential for sustainable development and effective economic planning.
