Lionel Messi Turns Sixth World Cup Into Another Night of History

Lionel Messi did not arrive at the 2026 World Cup to wave goodbye quietly. He arrived to remind football that greatness, even at 38, can still decide matches.

On Tuesday night in Kansas City, Messi delivered one of the defining performances of his long Argentina career, scoring all three goals as the defending champions beat Algeria 3-0 in their Group J opener. It was his first World Cup hat-trick, his record sixth appearance at the tournament, and his 200th match for Argentina.

By full-time, the numbers had become almost unreal. Messi moved level with Germany’s Miroslav Klose on 16 World Cup goals, tying the men’s all-time scoring record. He also became only the second male player to score in five different World Cups, joining Cristiano Ronaldo in another rare corner of football history.

For Argentina, it was the perfect start to their title defence. For Messi, it was another reminder that his World Cup story did not end in Qatar.

A Historic Night in Kansas City

The match carried a powerful sense of timing. Messi made his World Cup debut for Argentina on June 16, 2006, against Serbia and Montenegro. He scored that day as a teenager in Germany.

Exactly 20 years later, on June 16, 2026, he was still scoring for Argentina on the same stage.

This time, he was no longer the young prodigy. He was the captain, the World Cup winner, the elder statesman and still the player opponents feared most.

Argentina thought they had gone ahead even earlier when Messi put the ball in the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside. The frustration did not last long. In the 17th minute, Rodrigo De Paul found Messi, and the Argentina captain finished with the calm of a player who has lived this moment many times before.

It was emotional. Messi later said he had gone through “some tough days” but thanked his teammates and staff for helping him through them.

Messi Answers Fitness Questions

There had been concern around Messi’s fitness before the tournament. A minor hamstring problem with Inter Miami had slowed his preparation, even though he returned in Argentina’s warm-up win over Iceland.

Against Algeria, those doubts disappeared.

Messi was not just present. He was sharp, active and decisive. He pressed high early in the match, linked play, found pockets of space and punished Algeria whenever they lost shape.

His second goal came in the 60th minute after Alexis Mac Allister’s shot was spilled by goalkeeper Luca Zidane. Messi reacted first and tapped in the rebound. It was not the prettiest goal of his career, but it showed the instinct that has kept him dangerous for two decades.

The third goal, in the 76th minute, was vintage Messi. He moved into space, balanced himself and drove a low finish beyond Zidane to complete the hat-trick. Moments later, he was substituted to a standing ovation from a heavily pro-Argentina crowd.

Messi summed up his own condition simply: “This is my sixth World Cup, and I still feel like I’m in good shape.”

Argentina Look Ready for Another Run

Argentina’s 3-0 win was not just about Messi. It was also a controlled team performance from the defending champions.

Lionel Scaloni’s side defended with discipline, managed the tempo well and avoided the kind of opening-game shock they suffered against Saudi Arabia in Qatar 2022. That defeat four years ago became the beginning of a comeback story. This time, Argentina started with authority.

De Paul again looked like Messi’s closest running mate in midfield. Mac Allister added control and threat. The defence stayed compact when Algeria tried to build attacks through the middle.

Algeria had a brief moment of hope when Fares Chaibi had a goal ruled out for offside, but they struggled to create enough danger after that. Riyad Mahrez, Houssem Aouar and Mohamed Amoura were introduced in the second half, yet Argentina remained comfortable.

Algeria coach Vladimir Petkovic later gave the simplest summary of Messi’s impact: “Class is permanent.”

A Record That May Not Stand for Long

Messi entered this World Cup with 13 goals in the tournament. His hat-trick moved him to 16, level with Klose, who had held the men’s World Cup scoring record since 2014.

Now the question is not whether Messi can catch the record. He already has. The question is whether he will take it outright in the coming matches.

Argentina still have group games to play, and if Scaloni’s side advance as expected, Messi will have more chances to stand alone at the top of the World Cup scoring chart.

The achievement is even greater because his goals are spread across different eras. He scored in 2006, went goalless in 2010, returned strongly in 2014, scored again in 2018, carried Argentina in 2022, and has now exploded into 2026 with three goals in one night.

That kind of longevity is almost impossible in modern football.

The Last Dance Still Has Fire

Many believed Qatar 2022 was the perfect ending. Messi finally lifted the World Cup, completed his trophy cabinet and gave Argentina their third world title.

But Kansas City showed that the story still has another chapter.

This Messi is different from the Barcelona-era genius who destroyed teams with speed and endless dribbles. He now plays with economy. He chooses his moments. He allows the game to come to him. But when the chance arrives, the left foot remains ruthless.

Scaloni described him as “incredible,” and that word still fits.

Messi may be approaching 39, but Argentina are not carrying him. He is still carrying moments. He is still deciding matches. He is still changing records that once looked untouchable.

Twenty years after his World Cup debut, Lionel Messi has turned another tournament into his stage.

And after three goals against Algeria, the defending champions have started their campaign with belief, control and the clearest message possible: Argentina are still dangerous, and Messi is still Messi.
