Lagos Announces Relocation of Computer Village to Katangowa

In a significant move aimed at reorganizing the bustling markets of Lagos, the Lagos State Government has announced the relocation of the famous Computer Village from Ikeja to Katangowa, located in the Abule-Egba area.

This decision, revealed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on eGIS and Urban Development, Dr. Olajide Babatunde, marks a pivotal step in the state’s urban development strategy.

Dr. Babatunde, during a joint inspection and enforcement carried out by the Lagos State Building Control Agency in conjunction with law enforcement agencies and other relevant government bodies, emphasized the government’s commitment to reorganizing markets in Lagos. “We are trying to re-organize all our markets. In Ikeja, for example, we have the Computer Village, which is being relocated to Katangowa,” he stated.

The relocation of Computer Village to Katangowa is not an isolated event but part of a broader initiative to enhance market organization and infrastructure in Lagos. The new Katangowa market is envisioned to be a comprehensive commercial hub, equipped with modern facilities including a crèche for children, schools, playgrounds, religious centers, storage rooms, warehouses, accommodation, and hotel facilities.

Dr. Babatunde further elaborated on the government’s vision, stating, “We are moving those people who seem to be on the road in Ikeja and obstructing traffic, into a proper market big enough with all the services.

We are trying to do things properly, working on all of these things to ensure that we re-generate, re-develop, innovate, and conserve, and anything we need to do in terms of the terminologies we have in urban development will be put into play in Lagos in a way that we would have a greater Lagos rising.”

The relocation, initially planned for 2017, faced delays but has now gained momentum with the state’s former Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Wasiu Anifowose, confirming that all arrangements have been made to facilitate the move of the traders.

As the Lagos State Government embarks on this ambitious project, the relocation of Computer Village to Katangowa is set to open a new chapter in the state’s urban development narrative. This move not only promises to decongest the busy streets of Ikeja but also paves the way for a more organized, accessible, and modern commercial environment in Katangowa.

The coming weeks are expected to reveal the government’s efforts in transforming Katangowa into a bustling market that caters to the diverse needs of its traders and customers, reinforcing Lagos’s position as a leading commercial hub in Nigeria.
