Lagos Confirms Phase 2 of Lekki Port to Begin Soon
Lagos State is set to kick off Phase 2 of the Lekki Deep Sea Port, a development aimed at cementing its status as West Africa’s leading maritime and logistics hub.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the announcement at the Invest Lagos Summit 3.0 earlier this week, underscoring the state’s commitment to expanding critical infrastructure and attracting both local and international investment.
According to the governor, the port’s expansion will increase cargo-handling capacity, boost maritime trade, and strengthen Lagos’ role as a gateway to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which covers a market of over 1.4 billion people with a combined GDP exceeding $3 trillion.
“Within five years, the Lekki Deep Sea Port is moving to Phase 2 because it is nearing full capacity,” Sanwo-Olu said. “These are not mere aspirations. These projects have been funded, implemented, and are actively transforming the investment landscape of our state.”
Wang Qiang, Managing Director of Lekki Port, praised Lagos for providing a stable and investment-friendly environment. He highlighted that the next phase will play a critical role in expanding operational and cargo-handling capabilities, improving logistics efficiency along the Lekki corridor, and attracting additional global shipping and logistics investment.
“The expansion aligns with Nigeria’s broader trade facilitation agenda and meets the growing demands of regional and international shipping networks,” Qiang said.
“With the support of the Lagos State Government, we are confident that this phase will strengthen Lekki Port’s position as a premier gateway for West African trade under the AfCFTA framework.”
The Phase 2 development signals a major milestone for Lagos’ maritime sector, promising enhanced operational efficiency and increased capacity to handle the region’s growing trade volumes.
