The Malawi government has denied allegations of illegal mining at the Kangankunde Rare Earth project, stating that official inspections of the site revealed no evidence of unauthorized activity.
The Minister of Mines confirmed that the government’s investigations found no proof of unauthorized mineral extraction or illegal exports from the facility.
The clearance comes after reports emerged suggesting illegal operations at the project, which is one of the most prominent rare earth developments in the country. Rare earth elements are critical for the global production of high-tech electronics, electric vehicle batteries, and renewable energy infrastructure.
According to the government, the inspection process was focused on verifying the legality of current extractions and ensuring that no minerals were being smuggled out of the facility in violation of national laws.
The official denial aims to stabilize investor confidence in the project and reassure the public that the government is maintaining strict oversight of the nation’s mineral assets.
The Ministry of Mines maintains that the project remains compliant with regulatory standards and that no illegal mineral movement has occurred.
